The Role
As a bike mechanic, you will assemble, maintain, and repair bicycles while adhering to MEC guidelines for productivity, quality, and safety. You will advise and train front-line staff on bike repair processes and procedures. All repairs will be performed with MEC's sustainability principles in mind. In winter, bike mechanics assist our ski workshop by installing, adjusting, and repairing ski bindings and skis.
You will help members source quality gear with the expert advice they need to feel inspired in their activities. You will work both behind the scenes and on the sales floor to organize inventory and provide members with the products they need. You will discuss our products with members, drawing on deep knowledge and personal recommendations. You have an affinity for helping people at all levels find the right product.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide member service in accordance with the SERVE standard, in the workshop or sales floor as needed
- Ensure organization, safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of the work space
- Assemble bicycles according to MEC standards
- Perform basic repairs including wheel truing, internal cable routing, transmission adjustment, bottom bracket and headset selection and installation, in accordance with MEC quality guidelines and time standards
- Install and maintain all components necessary for proper bicycle function
- Install and maintain bike-related accessories such as fenders, racks, and bottle holders
- Provide diagnostic assistance for bike operation issues and propose solutions to member problems
- Ensure final inspection and quality assurance of new and repaired bikes meet or exceed MEC standards
- Complete necessary documentation and perform other administrative tasks in accordance with MEC standards
- Maintain excellent written communication skills for receiving bicycles for mechanical work
- Source parts in accordance with MEC standards for work orders
- Manage inventory and enter data
- Track hours worked in each function of the bike shop
- Maintain MEC-specified productivity standards
- Comply with all loss prevention policies and procedures
- Complete other tasks as assigned based on business needs
Qualifications
- At least one year of professional experience as a bike mechanic in a bicycle shop
- Availability in accordance with MEC availability guidelines based on employment status
- Demonstrated mastery of parts terminology, maintenance techniques, and parts compatibility
- Demonstrated ability to build a bicycle during the hiring process
- Advanced computer skills in using D365 systems
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, carry, reach, push, and pull for extended periods
- Capacity to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to climb ladders
- Fine motor skills and dexterity
